Sempiternal
1.
“I’m ugly.”
They sat in a jail made of bones.
She traced her jagged fingernail along the nicks and cuts tattooed on her legs, eyes intense.
“No, you aren’t,” Gerard laughed, “I’d marry you.”
“When we get out of here and grow up – in a whole new world.”
Erza stared at the promise reigning on his face, committed to her mind the breadth of his smile and the number of scratches upon his ashen cheeks. When the shackles twisting her legs became weightless and her wrists and ankles ached no more, she nodded softly in agreement,
sealing their wicked curse.
2.
Alzack and Visca were not courageous.
There was something contenting about being able to touch Alzack’s cheek with a flutter of a kiss, masking as a good luck charm – to hang an arm around Visca’s pale shoulders on the guise of overprotective friendship.
They were adequate sharpshooters, the ones who chatted companionably at that designated table in the bar, the ones who found a hobby in observing Gray and Juvia dance around one another’s personalities, and surely two of the sanest in the topsy-turvy guild.
But above all that, they were simply just friends – too afraid to be anything more.
3.
Gajeel fetches the book weaved with enchantments and spells from the top shelf she cannot reach, routinely pounces in front of her to thwart a generic attack, hacking blood and chewing through mountains of iron in the process.
“You don’t need to do this, I forgive you,” Levi admits to him one night in the bar.
“What? I’m not looking for forgiveness,” he snorts, visibly insulted.
“Then why do you…?”
Gajeel regards her with fierce metallic eyes and aloof iron gaze, like he is trying to say something – but falters away at the last second.
“Small people would never understand.”
4.
It is a peaceful night when Natsu and Happy raid Lucy’s house out of innocent habit. They poke their heads through the carelessness of the open window and crawl into the cosy room, bodies creaking from the arduous mission of the day.
Natsu has his hands positioned strategically overhead, expecting Lucy-in-a-towel to pummel him – a very wide smile on his face regardless. But Happy paws his vest and directs his attention to the girl lying asleep on her bed, shirt revealing a little too much skin.
Natsu chuckles quietly. He sits down and guards her until he too falls asleep.
5.
There are days when Gray chugs rootbeer at the bar and chats with friends, Juvia clustered amongst them with an admiring smile. There are times when he receives an alarming realization that he is half-naked in the middle of a mission, along with Juvia – who is by far more excited than embarrassed. And once, he saves her with icy warriors and a straight face, whisking her in his bare arms.
Juvia frames these memories with love – she hums, treasures them like the feeling of rain smiling against her skin – waiting for the day where he too, will do the same.
6.
She takes shelter in the deepest crevices of the grand forest, shielded behind the protection of leaves and the watch of the owls. She bathes in the warmth of the sun and the quiet trickle of the stream, crushing herbs and mixing concoctions that earn her the adjective ‘deadly’. She blooms in solitude – scowls at the noise of footsteps and snaps at the sound of spoken words.
When he appears unannounced, big grin and loud laugh compacted into his small frame. She has half a mind to ignore him.
But her hand moves to set the kettle on the stove instead.
