Breaching out of Conformity.
.
.
They would make it a distinguished habit to eat sushi every other day, sometimes with Dotachin, at others with just Saburo. And on particularly clouded weeknights when the two adults were too caught up doing things grown-ups were supposed to be burdened with, they hardly paid mind as they settled in a cozier booth. Simon endeared whatever kind of patronage he could forcibly yank and chain to tables of the restaurant. With the wide berth of his arms, and benign smile, it was no wonder that he favored the two of them. The teenagers would break their chopsticks and proceed to prod experimentally at the day's specialties – given at discounted price of course; it was nothing out of the ordinary. They were never too shy to tell the truth of their genuine keenness of the sushi that would be served; the dishes reminded them fondly of Sanae's rainbow bread.
Simon would give ready-made speeches of recollections concerning his old, perpetually missed, home. His accented voice would always remain hearty, the wide berth of his arms open and inviting at the corner of their table. Their eyes would smile as they chewed on commonly unusual food and listened, sometimes feinting, sometimes politely not. It was almost painful imagining that they would not be able to hold it together if they lost something as simple, as innocent and as overlooked, as this.
The headless motorcycle-rider would sometimes gallop past them in a fashion that made their irises linger instinctively at the corners of their eyes. How lucky the ghostly-legend was, he was essentially like them – he was a wildly-lit cannon, a free, heroic spirit traveling the winding roads of the city. And it sounded dandy and great, and perhaps enticing for the most part. But the two of them would lean against the railing of an overhead bridge and stare blankly at the city's neon lights and honking cars, wondering what they could actually accomplish while they waited for the latest episodes to be uploaded online. Being a part of the supposed 'Dollars' wasn't doing much to ease their free time, but it was admittedly fun to torture their victims – they were basically looking forward to the day they could draw a choice volume of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni from the stack to use.
When the night would stretched loudly over them, after dancing to an obscure anime opening – but once in awhile, an ending like say, from Midori no Hibi, because those tended to be perfect for slow, romantic turns and waltzes and dry tears – they would pick up the grey boombox and crinkly plastic bags filled with the latest volumes that had been shipped in. Only after patiently and lovingly accounting for each richly-inked paperback, would they begin to saunter merrily down the proactively-lit streets of Ikebukuro. Who needed school or family or all that crap, when they had each other? Dotachin and Saburo, too, would always be there for them.
At least, that was what they pretended as they stared briefly into each other's eyes.
Their hands would tighten, large over small, boy over girl, and their fingers were ardent as each digit curled comfortingly. Regardless of whatever happened, they would have each other, even if the rest of them bothered with abandonment – and they realized that they couldn't pin blame on Dotachin if he locked the van's door and left them coughing in a puff of smoke one fine day. Were otakus of any visible asset to the gang scene? They'd ponder briefly in silence that was cacophonous with soundless uncertainties, the kind that made his smile disappear and her eyes water.
"Did you download the latest episode?" she would ask in a mock-happy tone, coaxing the caustic thoughts somewhere faraway.
They would round the corner into an alleyway that would prove to be a shortcut back to their apartment. The shadows lengthened purposefully, the gnawing gloom was usually hard to chase away once it had settled over them. But of course, he kept that ever optimistic smile sewed to his features, his eyes closed and his expression indulgent. She would respond with a twitch of the mouth, because she was never as experienced in acting as he.
"I've spent the entire day with you, how could I've done that?" he would reply, his voice bouncing back with reason and light-heartedness.
She would sulk most noisily, motioning to deliver him a smack on the back of his chestnut-haired head.
"You know I like my Yaoi fix," she would growl irritably.
And then he'd sidestep it with adaptable ease, a teasing smirk encompassing his face and melting her heart in expectant surprise. "Why are you so interested in BL? I'm not as enthusiastic about Yuri, y'know." He'd draw near, untangling his fingers from her hand and placing it lightly on her shoulder, tracing the blade before tenderly thumbing the side of her neck. And before he could start whispering flattery that would make her heart shudder like a timid Hinata, she had already turned into him and wrapped her hands around his waist.
And they would kiss passionately, embrace dearly, and touch whatever they had in their reach – because who knew how long such a treasured blessing would last in a city such as Ikebukuro? They'd fall into each other's arms; her hat would be brushed off as they pushed aside an annoying garbage can and sank against the concrete wall of the apartment building. Absently noticing in between the meeting of lips, they realized that it resembled the one Chii and Hideki boarded in, as they bathed in the waning moonlight and tasted each other's warmth. Maybe they would stay there for just a second or so, since there was anime to be watched at home –
or perhaps they would stream the episodes after dawn broke.
end.
